prepare pond for warm season

If you took the right steps last autumn, you have already prepared your pond and equipment for winter. We have described these steps in our winter blog, click on them to check them and still perform them if this has not happened.

But now it is high time to prepare pond and equipment for the warm season!

Preventive maintenance is very important to keep devices and pond in good condition. It also extends the life of devices and that is of course always desirable, because it saves you unnecessary repair costs and a disappointment of a pond that is not right.

SPRING

Check the devices below to prepare:

Pond pump

The pump is the heart of a pond system, without a pump water is standing still. In many cases, a pond pump is linked to a filter and it must be able to filter optimally, especially when the weather gets warmer and algae can develop.

Pollute pumps; lime and dirt deposits can form on rotating parts. Follow the instructions of the instruction booklet to clean these parts and to check for any damage. A contaminated pump brings less capacity, consumes more power and can eventually fail.

If you have a pump that can be electronically controlled, it may be raised again.

UV-c device

A UV-c lamp has a limited lifespan, after about 8000 operating hours the lamp works less effectively because the special gas in the lamp has been consumed and can no longer generate UV-c radiation. The lamp must then be replaced. And that is the time to clean the protective glass (quartz glass). Limescale stops UV-c radiation and that reduces proper functioning.

Follow the product instructions to replace and clean the mentioned parts.

The following applies to all electrical appliances: perform a visual check for possible damage to the power cables, safety is paramount. In case of damage consult with the supplier, especially with pond pumps, a cable cannot be replaced.

Pressure filter

Take the lid of the pressure filter. Depending on the model and brand, a UV-c lamp is attached to the lid together with the filter package.

Follow the instructions for cleaning the filter package and UV-c device. If necessary, replace the UV-c lamp, if necessary.

Note for breakage: The filter package can be very heavy if it is heavily soiled.

Arc sieve

Clean the front and rear of the sieve thoroughly with a brush, remove accumulated dirt from the housing and drain residual water.

Drum sieve

Follow the manufacturer / supplier’s instructions, screen cloth and water nozzles.

Skimmer

Water flow must always be guaranteed, too little water flow can be disastrous for devices attached to it, such as pumps and UV-c devices.

Check the input and skimmer baskets for pollution, if a skimmer basket has been removed, even dirt can still be present in the suction pipe to the pump, we often encounter frogs.

Air pump

An air pump always has an air filter, so that dirt particles are not sucked into the pump. Often this is filter cloth or something like that. Wash or replace it.

Pond lighting

Cleaning the spotlight glass with a sponge, algae deposits reduce the light passage.

Water quality

Check the GH value (water hardness) of the water, which should remain around the GH 12 °. Autumn and winter precipitation may have lowered the GH value. You can correct this with GH + agents, because too low a GH value can cause algae growth. A sufficiently high Kh value (8) prevents acidification of the total pond environment.
